I'm Fine!
When it comes to health, most of us assume we’re doing fine if we feel good and pass our routine physicals with flying colors. I used to think the same—until I learned firsthand the limitations of standard health screenings. Here's my story and why the Vessel approach to 109+ biomarkers goes beyond the basics, offering insights that can truly transform your health.
My Wake-Up Call: The Yearly Physical That Almost Missed the Mark
At 45, I reluctantly went in for my regular yearly physical. It wasn’t because I didn’t care about my health—I’ve always taken care of myself, felt great, and saw no reason to change. But I had promised my wife that at 45, I’d start making these checkups a habit. So I went.
As expected, everything came back "normal." The same happened at 46, 47, and 48. At 49, however, I got a different result: slightly elevated cholesterol. According to more recent guidelines, my numbers were no longer "fine," and I was told I’d need to go on a statin.
“How long?” I asked my doctor. Without hesitation, he replied, “Forever.”
That’s when it hit me: I was entering the sick care system. I wasn’t interested in jumping on the medication train for the rest of my life unless it was absolutely necessary. I’m all in for medical interventions when needed, but not for preventable chronic diseases. So, I began my own research.
Cholesterol Confusion: The Numbers Game
One thing I quickly learned is that cholesterol guidelines have changed dramatically over the years:
-
In 1984, a total cholesterol of 300 mg/dL was considered the upper limit of normal.
-
By 1993, this was lowered to 250 mg/dL.
-
In 2004, it dropped again to 200 mg/dL.
Each change added tens of millions of people to the “high cholesterol” category—and many of them were put on statins. Yet, the research supporting these numbers is thin, and most cardiac inflammatory issues stem from factors like sugar, fructose, alcohol, and genetics—not egg yolks and steak, as once believed.
Despite my research and lifestyle adjustments, my cholesterol remained high a year later. That’s when I decided to go deeper.
The Deep Dive: 109+ Biomarkers and What They Revealed
I turned to the Cleveland Heart Lab for a comprehensive panel of 109+ biomarkers—the same lab Vessel uses to analyze our patients' labs. I also had a DEXA scan to assess body composition. What I discovered was eye-opening:
-
Decreased thyroid function was driving an increase in visceral fat.
-
This visceral fat was causing cardiovascular inflammation, which wreaked havoc on my system.
-
Fourteen biomarkers had shifted from "normal" to alarming red zones, signaling significant cardiovascular risk.
The root cause wasn’t high cholesterol alone. It was a cascade of metabolic issues that standard testing would never have caught. Without this deeper dive, I might never have understood the full picture of my health.
Why 109+ Biomarkers Matter
The 109+ biomarker test doesn’t just measure cholesterol; it provides a detailed view of your overall health, including:
-
Metabolic Health: Tracks markers like insulin resistance, glucose levels, and advanced lipid panels.
-
Hormonal Balance: Assesses thyroid function, testosterone, and other key hormones.
-
Inflammation: Identifies inflammatory markers like CRP (C-reactive protein) and homocysteine that contribute to chronic disease.
-
Cardiovascular Risk: Measures advanced lipid profiles, apolipoproteins, and lipoprotein(a) for a clearer picture of heart health.
Real-Life Examples of Biomarkers Saving Lives
Case 1: Silent Inflammation
A 50-year-old patient felt great but had high CRP levels, indicating systemic inflammation. Further testing revealed an autoimmune condition that required immediate attention.
Case 2: Misdiagnosed Fatigue
A 40-year-old man was told his fatigue was "just aging." Biomarker testing revealed suboptimal thyroid function and low testosterone. With targeted interventions, his energy and performance returned.
Why You Should Consider Comprehensive Testing
The standard yearly physical is a good start, but it’s far from enough. Comprehensive testing offers:
-
Early Detection: Catch problems before they become symptomatic.
-
Personalized Insights: Understand what’s happening in your unique body.
-
Root Cause Analysis: Address the underlying issues, not just the symptoms.
My Takeaway
The 109+ biomarker test quite literally saved my life by uncovering the root causes of my health issues. It’s a reminder that "normal" doesn’t always mean optimal. If you’re ready to take your health seriously, start with a comprehensive approach know as the Vessel Method. You’ll thank yourself later.
In my next blog, I’ll share the steps I took to address my biomarkers and turn things around. Stay tuned!
